Jamie Douglas-Hamilton
Jamie is a 15-time Guinness World Record holder for ocean rowing. He has rowed from Australia to Africa (2014) and has rowed across the coldest and most extreme seas on the planet. In 2019, Jamie and ‘Impossible Row’ team completed the first human-powered crossing of the Drake Passage, rowing across severe weather systems on a small, exposed rowing boat, landing in Antarctica on Christmas Day to an audience of thousands of penguins.
Jamie has set 7x world first records for ocean rowing:
- First row across the Southern Ocean
- First row across the Drake Passage
- First row to the Antarctic Continent
- First to row the Southern Ocean in both directions
- First human-powered expedition on the Scotia Sea
- First human-powered expedition from the Antarctic
- First human-powered expedition on the Southern Ocean
Other records include the fastest polar row and the southernmost latitude reached by a rowing vessel.
Jamie feels a deep sense of connection with the oceans, especially the Southern Ocean, and is greatly concerned about the reinforcing feedback effects of ocean tipping points. He wants to highlight the urgent need for 30% of the Southern Ocean to be protected by 2030.
